January Film & Music Favourites

Hello, hello!

Isn't January such a weird month, readjusting after Christmas and the blues that come along with it. For once though, I have actually had a pretty good month! But I am also glad to see the back of it, I feel like my year is only properly coming together now. However, I have managed to come across some amazing music and film discoveries this month (especially with all the time off I've been having), so I thought with it being the end of the month I would do a roundup of my favourites. I know that my film and music posts aren't as popular, so keeping them together in one post makes it more accessible for those who want to read, and easy for those who want to skip past it. So, let's start with music.

MUSIC

To start with if you look on my sidebar to the right,  you will see I have linked my Spotify playlist for this month, so while reading this post (or after) you can have a listen if you're interested, all of the songs I talk about (and the rest of my favourites from the month) are all in that playlist.

There seems to be a heavy focus on soulful moody female focals with songs such as Eliza -Wasn't Looking,  ZURI - Beg For It, and Courage & RAY BLK - 2 AM. These songs are stand outs which I have loved.

But there is also a focus on chilled more stripped back dance /electronic tracks, these sort of tracks always seem to clear my mind and help me relax, which is exactly what everyone needs to cure the January Blues. My top discoveries this month would be Crooked Colours - Flow, The Kite String Tangle - Selfish and Sense & Eleven - All Mine.
Finally I can not forget the most exciting music release of of this month (well for me anyway), is the return of The Vaccines! There are one of my favourite current bands so I was super pumped about their return, and I can happily say that I am not disappointed. The two tracks released Nightclub & I can't Quit are instant hits.

FILMS

Films wise, this is where it gets more niche (hence why I put music first), with having a film degree I have certain tastes and certain themes / genres which I gravitate towards - especially independent cinema. This may not be to everyones cup of tea, but I want to discuss them anyway as they are incredible films which seem pretty underrated and deserve some more lovin'.

Davyveon (2017), Dir. Amman Abbasi

70% on Rotten Tomatoes
Independent Social Eealist coming of age film following the life of a poor disadvantaged black youth after his brother was shot dead. Beautifully shot with discreet unnoticeable camera work, i.e. body shots, hand held and lush smooth tracking. I loved how the film did not glorify gang culture, and kept it gritty. It isn't a remarkable film, it isn't full of big blockbuster moments or anything really shocking, but that adds to the beauty of it. It just demonstrates the mundane reality of what his (and the other kids) life is like, and how little the opportunities they get offered are. It isn't Moonlight, but it is a beautiful film none the less. Oh, it's also available to stream on Netflix. Click here to watch the trailer.

Blame, (2018), Dir. Quinn Shepard

80% on Rotten Tomatoes
Written, Directed, Produced and starring Quinn Shepard this teenage coming of age drama follows the contrasting lives of Abigail and Melissa who are both struggling with something in their lives that they cannot control, but in very different ways. The film deals with basic high school issues such as bullying, sexuality and consent, but it also dives deeper into discussing mental illness,  abuse and teacher/student relationships. I think this is important in keeping coming of age dramas realistic, and is more relatable for teenagers going through similar situations. To me this is what makes the best of this genre, and these films are super important to me as I think there is a need to there to be more teenage films openly discussing mental illness and psychical abuse in the mainstream. I thoroughly enjoyed this film, there is a lot of depth to it and is a film you can watch the second time and notice so much more than you did the first. This would be my highest recommendation of the month. Click here to watch the trailer.

Call Me By Your Name (2018), Dir. Luca Guadagnino

96% (Certified Fresh) on Rotten Tomatoes
This is the most stunning critically acclaimed romantic gay drama I have yet to watch. It is a beauty to behold, an absolute masterpiece. Depicting the blooming summer romance between Elio and Oliver, the development and attention to detail between these two characters is stunning. There is unbreakable chemistry between these two, and it speaks a million through their body language on film. If you are into your LGBTQ movies then this is for you, it's also for you if you like an epic love tale. I can't rave enough about this film, it has really stolen my heart. I feel this one is going to win a lot of awards this year, and is most definitely going to be a worldwide success. Click here to watch the trailer.

So those were my music and film favourites for January, these all kept me positive and happy within the longest / most dark month of the year!. Let me know in the comments what your favourites were! I'd love to know!

Strawberry Fields Forever

Aloha! Today I felt like combining two of my favourite things for this post, fashion and The Beetles. The people who know me IRL, will know that my favourite band of all time is the Beetles, I am a full on die hard fan. From the early to the late work (although I am more into the later stuff). There music is timeless and never fails to make me smile. I don't have a favourite album, I'm more about a certain collection: The Magical mystery Tour, The Yellow Submarine & Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band. All released in between 67&69 these albums have my heart. They are fun, experimental, silly, psychedllic and bold in such an unapologetic way.

So for today's look and today's edits I decided to go for a bold fun colour blocking look. I am wearing my favourite denim pinafore / dungaree dress. This piece was thrifted, and I cannot seem to find a similar dupe anywhere that is in stock. This is the closest I've found but is out of stock :(. Underneath is a super cute green and blue striped polo, which you can find pretty much everywhere. To add the pop of yellow (bright primary colours are always something I associate with The Yellow Submarine, especially yellow!) I matched my Dr Martens with my cardigan. I topped the look of in the most appropriate way with my strawberry hat (hence the title of this post), a chunky red belt and a rainbow beaded necklace. Most of these items you can pick up pretty easily if you keep an eye out in your local charity shops and vintage shops (as I always do!) Unfortunately I don't have many dupes for my items today, sorry about that!

I feel like my attitude towards fashion and style is very familiar to The Beetles with their music. I love to have fun and be bold and I definitely don't care too much about what people think. I draw inspiration from everywhere, but I do think the beetles will always be one of my biggest inspirations. One of the biggest things that they taught me is just to have fun! Don't take life to seriously, and their music always reminds me to just be myself. But another part of them that I associate so fondly with is how they were constantly changing and evolving in style, music and fashion wise. They never stuck to one thing, which is certainly something that can be said for my style I can jump from one thing to another each day depending on my mood - you will not find a consistent style here I'm afraid! Combing my love for music & fashion together is one of my favourite things to do, and there will be more to come so watch this space!  I would also like to take this time to talk about Steep Drop Media Collective, my best friend start this creative group which I am more than proud to be a part of you. You will find parts of her work, be it edits or photography dotted about on my blog with the links provided. We plan to have a lot more fun and quirky colllaborations coming up so watch this space, and go give her page a follow here  The content is worth the follow, I promise. But for now that's me over and out,

XOXO, EMMA.

The Colour CLASH

Hello everyone! As I said in my previous post this is part two - in today's look I am styling 4 pieces that I got when thrifting. A hat, top, pair of jeans and a coat. The only thing that isn't thrifted is the boots! I could've done a complete lookbook featuring all the items but in all honesty there would be way too many looks for one post! Instead what I have decided to do on my blog is to show how good sustainable shopping is by featuring at least one item of clothing or accessory that is second hand in each look (which isn't even a challenge really). I want to show how with the right styling, and the right attitude you can be the trendiest person walking the streets and no one would batter an eyelid - in fact when I wear my second hand ensembles that is when I get the most compliments! Alongside the posts I am going to be linking similar items to ones I am styling that are on the high street - to prove that you can find the top high street trends at a fraction of the price! But for the items that aren't dupe-able - well it reinforces how special the whole experience is/items are. SO without further ado lets get into the look.

So let's start from the top with the red felt beret. These are literally everywhere - you can pick them up in near enough any popular high street brand and they are identical. This one only cost me £2. Which is probably well under half of what you'd pay new. HOWEVER if you must there is one in the zara sale for £3.99 here.  You can find these so easily so I would definitely recommend keeping an eye out as they are such a key trend at the moment.

Let's move down to the top, I wanted to keep in touch with the Parisian style so opted for a black and white striped smock style top. Originally from Zara but I paid £1.99 for it. Stripes are classic - and are always in fashion. But I liked the smock style as it made it a bit different. This one from Asos is the most similar I have found here. As well as the beret striped tops are some of the easiest things to thrift, and you can pick up some pretty unique styles as well.

So my personal favourite thing about this look at the cropped kick flare high waisted jeans. I almost squealed when I found them, and I did squeal when I tried them on and they fitted perfectly once I got home. These jeans are a prime example of looking at other sizes, these are a size 16 but because they are retro / vintage they run smaller much more like a UK 14. These are such a stylish piece, and I am still utterly obsessed with red (as you can tell). So these turned out to be my favourite purchase - mainly because I know I'll get so much ware out of them. I found quite a few similar pairs while having a browse. These are in the sale on H&M of £17.99 here. There are also a pair of weekday one's in the sale for £20 on ASOS if you'd rather have a higher quality jean here. I really wanted to go all out RED as I am an all or nothing gal and I love the effect that wearing these pointed red kitten heel boots have given, super fun and different. These are old season Primark but these are only £9.99 in the Zara sale! (Lord Bless January sales).

The final thing -and probably the biggest bargain of the century is this Made in England vintage Sherpa coat. It has real leather details, in near perfect condition and cost me the mere amount of £1.99! Can you even believe that? They were only just ticketing the item and I grabbed it before it even touched the shop floor. Later on the manager said it was a trainee that priced it up, and if i hadn't of got it they would've priced it a lot higher, so what a score. I researched it and they are selling for between £60-100. SO if that's your game, buying to sell - then keep them eyes peeled. This is one of those items which I can't seem to find a close dupe for, bu the teddy bear style is absolutely everywhere this season, with big fluffy coats being a massive trend. So I've managed to bag a true vintage piece that is still very current and trendy, that is one of a kind.

So if I haven't managed to sell you on thrift shopping these past two posts then I don't know what will! But you will for sure see more thrifting related content and images on my blog, I'm thinking of doing a 'where to thrift' post in the near future talking about all the different ways to shop sustain-ably so keep your eyes peeled for that if you're interested!

Masculine Looks & Thrifting Tips

Hello guys, so today was a lush family day spent doing my favourite past time - thrifting! For today's look I opted for a masculine / work wear influenced ensemble. The trousers, jacket, bag & Beret were all thrifted pieces (so tie in perfectly with this post), the boots are old season Primark but these from Boohoo are basically identical . The oversized top is a H&M Men's Divided piece, which I can't seem to find on the website but this is a similar design: here I wanted something structured but also effortless and I think this look achieves this.

I thought alongside my look I would bring to you some tips I've learnt along the years about how to find the best buys at the charity shops / thrift shops (if you're American). Something to note about me is that this is my all time favourite way too shop! With my style being an ecclectic mix of all styles, especially that of earlier periods like the 60's, 70's, 80's and 90s, vintage pieces are always catching my eye (and heavily vintage inspired items too!). I feel like if you look at today's current trends they are paying homage to some other period, which means most of the time you will find pieces in the charity shops that are almost identical to what we are seeing in the fast fashion high street stores. I really love the idea of recycling fashion, you are adding a new lease of life to an item of clothing that would've just done to waste. I also love the idea that you are picking up items that no-one else you know will have, it makes your looks even more special. I am certain that 90% of my wardrobe is secondhand garments, and with the resurgence of thrifting / it being "cool" now a lot more people are hitting up the charity shops too! So I thought for any newbies to the game, or to anyone who just wants some tips I thought I'd share my top 5.

1. Don't shop in City Centres

The worst mistake you can do is try and shop here, the stores will be hella overpriced and most of the good hidden gems will be long gone. The locations which seem to be best are lesser populated towns, places that may seem a bit 'rundown'. Here you are much more likely to find more shops, and much more bang for your buck. Best thing to do is do some research, look into places near you on google maps and search for charity shops within the area - its the best way to find out without wasting a psychical trip out there.

2. Discounted Shops

Keep an eye out  for these, they have them for a lot of charities but are mostly Barnardos, Age UK & Sue Ryder. They will have signs in the window that will say everything is either £1. £1.99 or £2. These shops are my favourite, as even though they are discounted they still get really good high quality items. So don't let the 'discounted' sign put you off, I have found most of my gems in these stores. Along with this look for independent charity shops that are local / not countrywide charities. These usually have very good pricing too.

3. Don't be afraid to ask

If there is something in particular you are looking for, or you have seen something in the back that you like the look of - ask! They will be more than happy to help, and more times than not you get your hands on something before it has even hit the shop floor.

4. Look through everything

The key to good thrifting is too look through everything, more times that not items are in the wrong area or are sized up wrong. I always shop in the men's section for over sized t-shirts, flannel shirts and band tees. If you are more petite I know people like to shop in the kids section as you can pick up some cool crop tops etc. Working in with this don't pay much attention to the sizing, if you have time try things on. If not, just judge it by the size of the item not by the size on the label. Older items run a lot smaller to our sizing now.

5. Volunteer!

If you want the top picks, the ones that no one else has seen (and you have some free time on your hands) then volunteer! Not only will it fulfill all your thrifting needs you will be helping out a deserving charity, as well as getting some experience that will look brill on anyones CV.

So, those are my five tips for successful thrifting, but something to note as well is that not every trip will be successful so don't be disheartened it you don't find everything you want straight away. There will be a part two to this post which features me styling all the items I picked up on this shopping trip, so keep your eyes peeled for that if you want too see what I picked up!

XOXO, EMMA

The Baker Boy Hat

Something that you can't miss is this key trend for Autumn Winter,  the baker boy hat. Luckily for me, it is probably one of the only style of hat that suits me, so I am fully obsessing over this trend. They can add a really cool touch too an outfit, be it a rock 'n' roll vibe or a nostalgic retro one. It all depends on the colour, material and details to the hat and the way you style It. For example I went for a retro vibe, with this cap being a deep rich purple colour and cord - which nods to the 60s and 70s (due to note the resurgence of these periods being heavily featured influences for this season).

By choosing to give the outfit a retro vibe I decided to wear this amazing vintage orange structured coat. It is more so reminiscent of the 80s with the strong shoulders and boxy shape, however I think it plays really well with the overall look. It seems nostalgic and playful, as well as bold and appropriate for the season with the use of colour. Warm tones are always essential in the Autumn / Winter. I like the way the jacket stands out against the monochromatic look underneath, with the houndstooth print trousers adding another retro touch.
Sticking to the monochromatic look I decided to wear my Dr Marten Monet , these are so so comfy, more like trainers than boots and look perfect with this outfit. However if you wanted to stick completely to the retro look, a pair of round toe chunky heeled boots in either black, white or orange would look incredible - especially if you was going out for food / drinks. However with this look being a wearable everyday look for me, I had to wear the most comfortable option on my feet.

Psychedelic Prints & Contrasting Tones

Today's look is one that is heavily inspired by the warm tones and psychedelic prints of the 70s. The iconic style of this period has made a massive comeback over the past few seasons from flared trousers and bell bottomed sleeves to corduroy and sherling jackets. But today I wanted to focus on something that hasn't been seen as much - the use of print. This is a handmade vintage skirt (probably made from fabric from that exact period) and features a bold optical illusion type print. It features the colourway of black, white and brown and is a stand out piece in my wardrobe. As much as I love all of the 70s trends I though this is a really fun way of styling a 70s piece that we don't see too much of.

To work in with the tones in the skirt I decided to add a rich warm toned knit in an olive / mustard colour. It ties in well with the colourway of the skirt and keeps up the 70s look. However I thought to keep the look current and fresh I would juxtapose the warm tones with my cool toned grey coat and metallic silver/green bag. This adds a cool twist to the look and makes it more modern and much less a simple recreation of a look from that time. To finish the look of (and to make it more casual) I threw on my trusty old skool vans, However if you was heading out for food or drinks a pair of metallic heeled boots would look incredible.Photos by the incredible Sophie Donoghue / Steep Drop media. My favourite albums of 2017

My oh my what a year 2017 has been, not going to lie it's been one of the hardest most challenging years of my life. I've achieved a lot, but suffered a lot also. But the bad times have slightly weighed over the good. However it is not all bad, and if there is one thing I can always count on every year is my love for music. There have been a lot of stand out releases this year, and even though I have had a year of travelling into the past or just uncovering new artists that only have the odd singles, I do have a few picks that have knocked it out the park. There may only be three albums on this list, but I only wanted to include albums that I have been obsessive over and listened to on repeat - and these are the only ones that make the cut.

1. TYLER THE CREATOR, SCUM FUCK FLOWER BOY.

scum FK
Top songs: 911/Mr Lonely, Where the Flower blooms & I ain't got time!
If you know me personally you will know that this new release by the ever controversial Tyler the creator has stolen my heart. This album is such a masterpiece, the overall vibe of the album is so consistent even with the mix between hyped and slow songs. The lyrics are genius and very clever, always serving a commentary on the fuckery of society and playing on stereotypes and normalities that he is known for. I know I've picked out a whole bunch of favourite songs but 911/ Mr Lonely has been my anthem of 2017. He has been my number one inspiration this year, his vibe - and his style. Just 'errything about this guy this year is number one. This list isn't in any particular order other than this pick, this is my number one of the year.

2. KENDRICK LAMAR, DAMN.

661e1a935e2eacdd45c05ef618565535e7bed2ad (1)
Top Songs: DUCKWORTH & LUSH
Another one that won't surprise people is K. latest album. He is my favourite modern day rap artist, every album is absolute fire and his storytelling through his music is second to none. I will say, this album is one of my least favourites by him but it is still good enough to make this list, especially for the songs LUST & DUCKWORTH. Those two tracks are top dawg, probably due to the story that they tell within them (and the heartbeat throughout LUST gets me everytime I literally loose it over that beat).

3. ALT J, RELAXER.

alt-j-relaxer-album-artwork (1)
Top songs: Adeline, 3WW & Deadcrush.
A massive contrast to the other two picks, and probably very surprising  but 2017 has been the year that I uncovered my love for ALT J, through the release of this album. Obviously I always knew and loved the classics (breezeblocks, etc.), but I had never listened to an album by them until this year. They create the most interesting unique music that combines so many styles and genre, which makes there music definitely in its own lane. This collection of songs when listened to from start to finish transports you to another plane of existence, it honestly blows my mind. I know they are like marmite (similarly to Tyler I suppose) but if you are open minded towards music this album is one that will leave you speechless if you let it.
So they are my top albums of 2017, however there are so many other artists and albums that I have been obsessed with this year, so i might post another list in conjunction with this one all about my new discoveries and obsessions of the year ( that weren't released this year) Fingers crossed I have time! But for now, these top three will have to do.

Handsome Devil (2017), and the break down of Masculine Stereotypes within sports.

Handsome Devil (2017), is an Art House drama Directed by John Butler. The film is a coming of age teen LGBTQ feature, which you will come to realize is one of my all time favourite genres.

It is a comedic tale of two teenagers who are both outcasts but in completely different ways,  and their budding friendship demonstrates that you should never judge a book by its cover.

I'm holding it in the realms of films such as Perks of Being a Wallflower (which is one of my all time favourite books / film adaptations),  and I bloody loved it. I found the characters charming and relateable, and as I go on to discuss I especially love the focus on 'masculinity' and what it means to be a man. So here stands my SPOILER WARNING.
The film does an amazing job of highlighting masculinity in crisis and the problem within male sports. I think the most important aspect of this film is how it highlights homophobia within the very masculine sport, rugby. Masculine’ as to be defined as showing masses of aggression against / towards other males. The school is one consumed by the love for rugby, they practically worship it. The teammates mock and tease Ned because he isn’t interested in the sport (or more plainly not interested in proving his masculinity), by calling him gay which is a demonstration of the masculine/feminine stereotype. That if he is male and not interested in ‘masculine’ ideals, then it must make him gay.
9661
Conor is a character that breaks this down to its core and demolishes it. He is an assertive male, very masculine in appearance. He is strong, muscular and is heavily into sports and is the teams star player. He is the complete opposite of Ned, who is petite and interested in music and literature. If you are to play by the standard rules of stereotyping and stigmata’s then you would assume that Ned was gay, and Conor was straight (spoiler alert) – wrong. The way the film flips this on its head and shows the effects of homosexuality within sports is super important, and isn't one which we see often. At the end of the film when the team choose to stick with him anyway and put aside all their negative and homophobic feelings  is such a powerful moment. The fact that they are all rejecting the normality, and accepting that just because he is gay it doesn’t make him any less of a good player.
Handsome-Deviljpg
Another aspect to the film that I love is how Ned and Connors relationship never builds into anything romantic. I won’t lie I was really hoping that there would be a kiss at the end, but I am definitely glad that there wasn’t. It made it seem even more important? The fact that Ned never says he isn't gay, and never says he is is something important. It doesn't matter if he is gay or not, because that isn't the issue the film is highlighting. I honestly really admire that they kept it about friendship, as I suppose the romantic route would've been the most obvious. But I think it makes their relationship even more authentic and memorable.

Overall I thoroughly enjoyed this film and would give it 4.5 /5. This was definitely the way I wanted my viewing habits to start this year, more like this please! I think if you are someone who likes a film with a retro feel, that focuses on character development and the struggles of coming of age for teenage boys then this film is for you - and I would 100% recommend it.

XOXO, EMMA.

This is Me.

So with this being a fresh start to my blog (as I am transitioning over from Wordpress), I thought what better of my posts to start of with then an introduction to me?  So with it being a new year and all that jazz here goes my personal statement (UCAS eat your heart out). Also as a side note you should never be embarrassed or uncertain about bigging yourself up - never sell yourself short (you are amazing). I remember when I was applying for University and writing my personal statement I really struggled and felt really weird writing so highly of myself, but I've learnt that self love is the way to success. In the words of the Queen Ru Paul:

If you can't love yourself, how in the hell are you going to love somebody else?

Let's start with the basics - I am a 21 year old Film & Media Studies graduate. I live in the middle of nowhere -a random village right on the borderline between South Yorkshire & North Lincolnshire. It's a very quaint little village, with only one shop, two pubs and a post office - oh, and I stick out like a saw thumb. I am a family orientated gal, I spend the most time (when not at work) with my family. I love them to pieces and I would not be who I am without them.  I am a playful soul, I am always laughing and joking never taking life too seriously and allowing myself to be completely free.

20180106_132755

Something you'll know about me if you know me in person is that I am very adventurous with my style. I am heavily into colours, textures and prints. Anything that's fun, quirky retro and / or colourful is my thing. My motto (as my blog title suggests) is to try and bring brightness and happiness to peoples day, and my fun colourful ensembles are a huge part of that. I feel most myself when I am able to fully express how I feel through the style, it brings me joy and the most confidence in my day when I feel most myself.  As you can image, I am a giant kid at heart. I am obsessed with anything nostalgic that reminds me of my childhood, i.e. I am currently obsessed with the original My Little Pony from the 1980's & The Carebears. (I have an older sister, and all I would watch when I was little was her old VHS tapes, and I loved them to absolute death). Along with this I am mad obsessed with cartoons / adult animations, my favourites: Adventure Time, Bob's Burgers, Rick & Morty, Archer & Bojack Horseman (big mouth is also great.) In regards to films I am forever enthralled by art house / indie teenage come of age drama's, especially those central to LGBTQ characters, mental illness, disadvantaged youths (minorities - race, class, disabled etc.) & masculinity in crisis. That is my jam as my focal point for my dissertation was the representation of boys who have been sexually abused within feature length drama's.

20180106_133409

Music wise my tastes vary as much as humanly possible, I will listen to pretty much anything if I think it's good / well produced (as such meaning I do not listen to much pop / chart music). As with my tastes with everything else I love old and new music, but my number one band is The Beatles and my favourite artist is Florence & The Machine. But coming in very (very) close are Alt-J, Radiohead, The Smiths, Otis Redding, Joy Divison, The Vaccines (I could go on for so so long). But I'm sure if you stick around you'll find out more about my listening habits as I like to do monthly roundups of my favourite jams.

Without rambling on any further I think I have summarized myself pretty darn well, so if you like what you read and/or we have stuff in common the stick around. I would love you too! Most of the content I will go on to produce will more than likely stay central to most of these things anyway. So that's me being an unapologetic me, and so we all should be! Self love forever and always. Thanks for reading and sticking around, hope to see more of you!
