The most wonderful time of the year

With Halloween and bonfire night just going by meaning we are creeping closer and closer to Christmas, I thought I'd talk about why this time of year really is the most wonderful time of the year. Ever since I was little I always believed in magic, when I was younger it was more in the mystical sense. Now that I'm older I believe in the magic of love and togetherness, that warming feeling deep in your soul. When you get older the holiday season has a very different effect, it's less about the treats and presents and more about seeing people come together as families or friends to celebrate. You can see it everywhere, the look of joy and happiness on people's faces that is so pure and full of magic

Any chance I get to complete emeerse myself into celebrating and being a part of something where everyone is equal, I will jump in with two feet straight away and near enough drown in it. For the whole month of October it was spooktober for me. I'd watch something horror or Halloween related most nights, i got dressed up for work - twice! & went out with my girls all dressed up too. Something that I will never forget about Halloween (and all the holiday seasons) is that everyone is equal, you're dressed up as a neon clown? Cool! You're dressed up as a devil? Awesome! There should be no judgment, and to all those who slut shame girls who go out dressed like a "hoe", shame on you. Support your sisters (or brothers) if they want to wear that, who cares it's their body - not yours. Other than that for the most part their is no judgment, and the freaks and weirdos have their time to shine and celebrate being themselves.

I remember on the drive home from work on Halloween I saw loads of kids all dressed up trick or treating with their families and friends with massive smiles on their faces, and there it was magic. It's such a pure reminder that the world really isn't as bad as well all think, there is still that togetherness that a lot of us seem to think has been lost. I got a bit emotional, looking at all these kids who aren't tainted by the sins of the world yet, who are just enjoying being kids! Which is so rare too see now a days, it seems like everyone is just in too much of a hurry to grow up. Now all of us who are grown up will probably all agree that it's really not worth the hurry.

Like I said before this really is the most wonderful time of year, because it really does bring people together. That's what I love most seeing everyone not worrying about what is going on in the world, just enjoying those few minutes where nothing else matters. It might be a bit sad, and I know not everyone will feel this way but there is nothing more pure and reassuring for me. No matter who you are or where you come from, you are all celebrating the same thing. It doesn't matter what extent you go too, or how much money you spend at the end of the day the fact that we are all coming together in unison to bring light, happiness, and warmth to the world. I don't mean by religion or anything like that I mean by people, people bringing people together. That's the real magic.

I felt like this outfit was very on par with the wintery/ seasonal appropriate content of this post. This look was fun for me as I rarely wear this much of a cool toned / pastel look. It was nice for me to push myself out of my comfort zone. This whole outfit was thrifted, bar the jeans which i picked up in the h&m sale a fair few months back. I always feel bad when I can't provide links too my outfits, but 99% of my wardrobe is vintage and/ or second hand. Sustainability (and value for money) has always been something that I am passionate about so that's why I shop the way I do! Hopefully it will inspire you to look for more sustainable options, or at least to try something new / out of your comfort zone. We are all so obsessed with warm tones at the minute (well seems like a lifetime!), so it was nice to play against that. Until next time,

Not so "social" media, and why breaks are important

So over the past weekend I lost my phone on a night out, and subsequently I lost my ease of access to social media. I didn't think me literally having no choice but not to use it would make me realise how much I craved for a break, but I really did. Like I said in my previous post, our relationship with social media in this current age is obsessive and borderline toxic depending on your approach to it. We feel like we need to document our every move, and that if we aren't constantly up too date with it all then we aren't content.

We all need a phone for obvious reasons, too keep in contact and to make sure we are safe. But social media is not a necessity you do not need it to complete your day, or to make sure your day is running smoothly that is a sign of addiction, and at the end of the day we are all addicted. We scroll and scroll for hours on end looking blankly at a screen rather than communicating with the people around us, when you take a step back and look at it - how horrific is that? On the night that I lost my phone I was upset yes but once I did everything I could to find it, I was actually pretty liberated the rest of the night. Me and my friend Keeli were dancing the night away, chatting with everyone not checking the time, just getting lost in the night. Instead of  checking my phone for every buzz and notification, and thinking that I need to film and document the night, I just lived it. Lived it just for ourselves no one else, actually having those moments and memories that are just yours are actually precious and I think we all need to go back to experiencing things this way. Instead of always trying to prove to the online world that you had a good time through posed photos and false captions, actually enjoy yourself without feeling the need to validate yourself online.

A prime example of this is, when your at a gig or a festival what is one of the first things you think too do? Get out your phone and film it so you can post it on social media to show how much of a good time you had. How absolutely absurd? You see more of phone screens at gigs now more than the actual performance. I made a promise too myself about a year ago that I'm going to stop being one of those people, because it makes me so angry! How can you really enjoy the experience and immerse yourself in the magic of it all if your more focused on that perfect shot? The best gig I ever went too I didn't get my phone out once. It just goes to show that we care way too much about what others think of what we are doing and how we are perceived rather than just living and enjoying the moments that are so fleeting.

Not having social media made me pay more attention to the world around me, and the people in it. I had so many more social interactions with people, conversations that I probably wouldn't of had. I noticed a lot more of my surroundings, taking everything in rather than ignoring it. But at the same time I did feel a little lost, like out of the loop. I felt like I missed scrolling through my facebook feed or Instagram, but I didn't I was just that used to the routine that with it missing it didn't feel right. It has become such a huge part of our lives that when it is taken away your life feels so out of sync. I really did realise the damages of it, there is no need for us to be as attached to it as was are, not. at. all. Especially not when it is taking away from time spent with the people you love. On one of the days I was in town, and there was a couple sat together not saying a word, just both staring at their screens. Staring at something so meaningless when someone who is supposed to mean the world is sat right next too them. It made me so sad, I was sat with my parents and just thought Christ that would probably be me. I would be sat with two people that I hold dearest in the world and I would be interacting with something so fleeting when time with them is much more precious.

I love social media, but I hate what is doing to our society. The whole point of facebook was for better communication, how ironic now that people use it as a way to avoid physical interaction and communication.  It shouldn't be taking away from human interactions, it should be enhancing it. Capturing moments you want to live forever, we should not be wasting precious time with people we love for the sake of a few likes or shares. I understand that it will always be a massive part of our society now, but I do think that we all need to have a little break sometimes.  We need to learn when to put the phone down, we don't need to be on it as much as we are - it really isn't the be all and end all of our lives. Don't forget that we live in reality, not online. My new phone will be back up and running in a few days and I am making a promise to myself that I need to cut down my usage on social media, especially when I am out with friends or family. It is something that has been on my mind for a while, and it really shouldn't of taken me being forced not to use it to realise how much I am obsessed with it. In some ways I am glad I lost my phone, it has been a real eye opener, but we shouldn't all have too literally loose our phones for us to realise how much social media is effecting us. So every so often I think it's so healthy and important to just turn that data off and just enjoy life. Live it, take in everything around you and have it just for you. That absolute insanity that we all go through thinking that everything we do we have to document for the world too see is so unhealthy, and it takes away from the moment itself

I seem to be in such a conflicting love hate relationship with social media at the minute, but being forced to not be on it constantly has really changed my mindset towards it. Mostly Instagram, that's what I am most addicted too. To the point where my reality becomes less of a reality, but more like me trying to stage a instagramable perfect life. We are on this earth for such a short time, and our loved ones won't be there forever and wasting your time scrolling rather than appreciating life and it's company is so so sad. When you think about it, the fact that when we roll over in the morning the first thing most of us do is check all our notifications and do the obligatory scroll. For no reason other than habit, it has no real impact on our day. In some ways it is more likely to have a negative impact, filling our mind with all these false images of reality and then ultimately trying to make our day live up to that staged life. So that was my rant and clearly very conflicting feelings towards social media and our obsession with it. I really do think we need to be talking more openly about the fact that yes, we are all (or near enough all) addicted too social media, but you know how it goes as soon as the word addiction comes into play it all becomes a lot more taboo, and a much more touchy subject. I'm glad though that I am much more aware of the problem now, so I can finally do something about it.

Parklife 2018: Saturday Picks

Hello, Hello.

So if you haven't gathered already, I am attending Parklife for the full weekend in just over a week! Honestly, I am so excited and so I thought there no better time to talk through my top artist picks from each day, and why I think they are worth seeing. So today is Saturday, and hopefully by the end of this week I will have Sunday's up as well. Even if you're not attending the festival, these picks are all still worth a listen, if you haven't done so before.  So without further ado let's get cracking into the Saturday! The artist's will not be in order of when they are performing, or in order of favour. Just a list of artists that deserve to be seen (in my eyes!) Oh also, if any of these artists clash I am preparing myself for a mental breakdown.

A$AP ROCKY

Genre: Rap / Hip Hop
Mood: Hype, Intense, Explosive

Of all the artists performing this weekend, I think I am most excited about is A$AP. A few years ago I wouldn't of even been bothered, but in later years especially with MOB & Tyler collaborations I have become obsessed. His new highly anticipated album is fire, and I think he is going to put on such a good show. I feel like every year they pull out some of the best American Hip Hop artists, especially with last year being graced by the one and only Frank Ocean. 100% not one to be missed if you are a fan of rap music, or just want too see a very lively performance.

Some of my favourite tracks are,  Lord Pretty Flacko Jodye 2 (LPFJ2), Back Home, 1Train, A$AP Forever REMIX, Hun43rd (pretty much all of his new album).

THE XX

Genre: Indie Pop
Mood: Chilled, atmospheric. uplifting, euphoric, happy

Headlining on the main stage, this performance is going to be magical. I can just picture it now as being one of those super memorable festival moments that stay in your heart forever. I have loved them since the first album and the release of Basic Space. They are just such an incredible cohesive band, I actually missed out and getting tickets for their tour so I am super stoked about these as well. I won't lie, they are not a band I listen too as much as I used too, but I have wanted to see them live since the release of their first album, so what better way to do so.

Some of my favourite tracks are Shelter, Crystallised, Dangerous, Islands and Dangerous.

SAMPHA

Genre: Electronic Hip Hop / Soul
Mood: Chilled, atmospheric, soulful, emotional

One of my most played artists this year, and such an absolutely incredible voice. I actually stumbled across him last year at Parklife and fell HARD, we'd walked away from Rag 'n' Bone man, as he just wasn't our cuppa tea, and found Sampha with a crowd overflowing the tent. This year he has made his was too the main stage, and I think he is going to be incredible. His voice is so soulful and powerful, and sounds even better live. I know this one will be a spiritual one, I just cannot miss out on the opportunity to see him live again now that my love for him has grown so much more.

Some of my favourite tracks are Close but not Quite, Blood on Me, Plastic 100'C, Timmy's Prayer, Incomplete Kisses.

BICEP

GenreElectronic Dance
Mood: Euphoric, Energetic, Uplifting, Intense

Electronic Dance music duo that merge together all types of styles to create some incredible music. It's euphoric, uplifting and out of body. The switch up in their songs, and the build up is so intense but also so freeing. I can't wait too be a part of the crowd for their set, I can just tell the vibe is going to be spot on and exactly what festivals are about. I know this is a big switch up from my other recommendations above, but that's my music taste for ya!

Some of my favourite tracks are Rain, Aura, Glue. Opal.

MARIBOU STATE

Genre: Electronic Dance
Mood: Euphoric, Soulful, Atmospheric, Uplifting

Another Electronic Dance Duo but a lot more chilled out than Bicep. They combine incredible instrumentals, with atmospheric beats to create some extremely beautifully eclectic music. On some of my favourite tracks they also feature some of the most beautiful soulful vocals(Holly Walker), and this combination I think will sound so beautiful live, and the atmosphere will be so wholesome. I discovered these at University and they helped me through some super rough patches, so they have actually had a very positive impact on my life. This one will probably be an emotional one, but happy tears not sad ones.

Some of my favourite tracks are Midas, Turnmills, Steal, Breathe.

Honorable mentions (people who I also would like too see): Levelz, Bugzy Malone, Giggs, Tom Misch, Casisdead, Earl Sweatshirt,  Mella Dee, Solardo, Friction.

What I Wore to Florence & The Machine (& Dressing for Yourself!)

Hello, Hello.

So, If I was to name the artist who most inspires me, saved me and taught me so much about myself then it would be Florence & The Machine. Their music awakens something in me that nothing else ever has, it is such a spiritual experience that I feel so lucky to even be able to experience. This bank holiday weekend just gone, for some miraculous reason the stars aligned and they did a gig in my HOME TOWN of SCUNTHORPE (of all places!), and I managed to get myself a ticket. I don't know what possessed her to come to this town, all I can put it down to is fate and a pull of similar spirits wanting to be brought together. If you didn't know Scunthorpe is a town with a very bad reputation, and the location where they played was very small and intimate. It is the sort of venue that you expect bands and artist's to play early on in their career, not when they are this well know on a global scale. These sorts of venues are the  best places to see someone perform, because it feels so much more personal and you connect with them on a whole new level. I was standing as well, and I knew this is probably the closest I will ever get to my idol, and I honestly cannot even explain how much this meant to me.

The word of the street is that because she hasn't toured in a long time and she has her supporting show to The Rolling Stones in London, she was doing these small intimate gigs as warm ups for her up and coming festivals and The Stones in London. She played a mixture of songs, from all three albums, and she performed some never before heard songs from her new album High as Hope, and oh my god they were magical - I cannot wait for that album to drop, and for (hopefully) the tour she is going to do alongside it. This was hands down the best performance I have ever seen life, the vocals alongside the band in harmony is like nothing else on this planet. The crowd was sort of annoying, I am OVER the whole videoing and taking photos it actually infuriates me. It takes so much away from the whole experience, how can you fully immerse yourself in the experience if you are watching it through your phone? URG, that is a story for a whole other post because I could rant about it all day. I just went into my own little bubble, ignored the crowd around me and focused on the band, and I completely lost myself in a truly freeing, spiritual experience that felt like all my stress was lifted from me. One song that will stick with me forever is the performance of Mother. This is my favourite Florence song, and easily one of my favourite songs of all time. The fact that she decided to choose that song and perform it over some of her other songs, touched me in such a beautiful way. I don't think I have ever felt more spiritually connected with someone, than I did to Florence Welch in that performance. I don't have any more words to describe it than out of body.

I thought while I was here i would talk you through my outfit and how I will always stay true to myself no matter what. As some or most of you may know Florence Welch is known for her bohemian style, with flowy floral dresses and light delicate fabrics, but that style isn't particularly me anymore. I used to be heavily into "hippie" style while at University, but my style has evolved a lot since then. I was trying to piece together an outfit that was inspired by her style, and then I thought to myself hang up this isn't what she represents! She is all about self expression and being true to yourself, and I wouldn't be doing that if I had gone in something that I don't think represents who I am. I am a bold colourful soul, and I really wanted my outfit to reflect that. However, when I was there I saw a lot of girls all dressed in long floral dresses and they all looked beautiful and bohemian, but that just isn't me. I know I got a few funny looks and I stood out because I didn't look like I fitted in with the crowd, but truth be told I didn't! I don't fit in anywhere really, I'm into a mixture of all music all fashion all cultures and my style reflects that. I feel like some people where probably looking at me like "oh she is not a true fan", but just because I dress the way I do which is different too the "typical" crowd it doesn't make me any less of a fan. I have, and always will be one of their biggest fans, it is just that I do not feel the need to prove myself through my style.

This sparks something that I feel very passionate about, and that's being able to dress for yourself and to not give an F what anyone thinks of you. It is one of the most freeing feelings when you finally realise that you do not have anything to prove to anyone, especially not with how you choose to express yourself. I am a much happier and content person now that I don't worry about what people think about what I choose to wear / how I do my hair / my tattoos, because it all represents who I am. I love myself  and I think that is key to being able to let go of all societal expectations and just be free. This is central to Florence's being, in the middle of her set she always tells the crowd to turn to the people next to you and express your love because we are all free. SO if you wanna wear that dress, or have your hair a certain way DO IT! Life is way way too sort to be worrying about someone else's opinion, half the time it is central to their own insecurities anyway. It is so important to never take anyone elses bullshit, do not keep people around in your life that shame you for how you express yourself. Those people are only bringing you down by making you doubt yourself! You are fabulous, and however you choose to express that is absolutely incredible - do not let anyone tell you other wise.

March Playlist & Release Radar

Hello, Hello.

So, another month has passed which means another monthly round-up is here. This month, I don't have any new t.v. shows or films to talk about really, and I prefer the idea of keeping these posts solely about music - what I have discovered, and what is hot of the press that I think is worth a listen. As always, in the sidebar to the right is my spotify playlist for the month. You can give it a listen while you read this post, or save it to listen too later. So without further ado lets get into my jams of March.

If you know me, you know that I will always love The Vaccines. They were the first proper gig I ever went to, I have been to every album tour and I met them on my 20th Birthday. So, you can imagine my joy when on Friday the dropped their latest album COMBAT SPORTS. They had already released the three tracks, Put it on a T-Shirt, I Can't Quit, and Nightclub. I can't lie I do not listen too them as much as I used too, simply just because I am constantly looking for new discoveries rather than repeatedly listening too albums that I love, but from my first few listens I can tell this album is a winner. It really upbeat and sounds more uplifting rather than their normally moody pessimistic tone. I can't give my final verdict on it yet, nor can I pull out my favourite tracks but I'm sure I will be able to give a run down of my favourites next month.

This month we have seen the return of the three part rap group from NY. Towards the begin of the month they dropped the track Headstone, and just a few days ago they dropped U&I (feat. Dia). Both tracks same the same artwork so I am assuming they are both part of their new album, which will be the follow up to the 2016 3001: A Laced Odyssey. Both these tracks are incredible, but very different. Headstone is a true hype song for me, It proper gets me up. U&I is a lot more chill and has a real 90s vibe too it especially with the gospel vocals. I love them both, and I think one of the greatest things about Flatbush is the different tones and rap style that each of them have, yet they work so well together. Another of their tracks that isn't new, but is on my March Playlist is their remix of Portugal's Feel it Still. It is actually the first song that I added to the playlist, I love the new beat that they added to the song it gives it a whole new vibe, and their verses make it absolutely fire (better than the original in my opinion).

Another discovery of mine this month was the band Glass Animals, but more specifically the album How To Be A Human Being. I am late to the bandwagon with this one, with the album being released two years ago. But the song Youth made it's way into my my Discover playlist and knew I had to give them a listen. There music has a very feel good vibe, and I particularly like the hip-hop and synth pop vibes that you can hear in some of their songs, especially in my favourite track off the album, The Other Side of Paradise. I recommend listen too the album from start to finish as it is a brilliant listen. I love how each song is different and has a new vibe, it keeps the album fresh and interesting.

STAND OUT TRACKS

So I have been listening to a lot of rap music again this month, no shock there. But there have been a few absolute fire stand out tracks this month. The first being Energy (Cadenza Remix), by Avelino, Stromzy, Skepta & Cadenza. This track is such a good vibe, it's refreshing to hear grime artists over such a chill dance beat, it makes it less aggressive and more lightweight. It still packs a punch, but in a different way and I think that's why I like it so much. Secondly we have PICK IT UP (feat. A$AP Rocky) by Famous Dex. I really am not into these types of rappers, I cannot stand mumble rappers or any of that bullshit. HOWEVER, the BEAT and A$AP's verse are just out of this world. I think without his verse it wouldn't be as good, he really lifts the song to another level. I have been on a bit of a hype over A$AP lately, I think it might have a lot to do with the fact that he is performing at Parklife this year (*cries tears of joy*). The last stand out track has GOT to be OKRA, by Tyler, The Creator.  He literally dropped this track out of nowhere last week, a random drop and as he says - "a throwaway track". But is is hottttt, like ever other Tyler track, understandably he is a controversial Love / Hate artist, and you probably already know what side you fall on. His work is so different that if you haven't listen too him, just give him a lil listen because I don't think there is a way to describe his music style that will give it justice.

So that was my round up / summary of some of my favourite artists / tracks / releases of the month, obviously there are a lot more that I haven't discussed, which is why the playlist is linked so that you can give them a little listen. I hope you like the new format of this post, I think I prefer it to the way I was doing it before it makes it more cohesive. So, until next time!

Unnecessary Pressures, "Me" Time & Being True to Yourself.

Hello, Hello.

So lately I have been thinking about this ideal and pressure that we (bloggers) put onto ourselves to document everything that happens in our lives. Even if blogging is your full time job, you still need time (and moments) which you shouldn't feel the need to capture. It may seem slightly selfish, especially with the fact that being a blogger you are choosing to put your personal life out into the world - however there are some memories which are ones that are just meant for you. No one should ever feel bad or disappointed if you don't manage to shoot or get usable content, there is always another day - it is not the end of the world. What would be worse would be compromising your day and stressing to try and fit everything in. I think it's super important to find the right balance, if I was so caught up on shooting and making sure I had proof of what a fabulous day I had, it might've actually compromised how MUCH of a great day I had. For example, these amazing images where shot by my best friend Sophie @ Steep Drop Media in Newcastle. ( The link to her website is here, and the Instagram account is here too see more of her bad ass work). However,  a few weeks prior we had planned to also shoot in York, but the day got away with us and we didn't get enough time - and that's what actually started this thought process and blog post. That was such a lovely day that we had for ourselves, but at the time I couldn't help but feel a little bit bad, guilty even - about not getting any usable content. It is such a destructive path to go down because you are literally burning yourself into the ground, trying to make everything perfect when the best in life comes naturally.

Now don't get my wrong some of my favourite days are spent shooting, and I love and enjoy them. Like I said, this day shooting in Newcastle was so much fun, and was one of the best days I had had in a long while. However not everyday has to be a shoot day, and not everything needs to be documented. Knowing and accepting that is such a powerful thing, because it allows you to take a breathe and enjoy your time. I was honestly putting myself under all this unnecessary pressure, which in the end can draw the fun out of life, and then what would be the point? I had an equally good day in York having a well deserved catch up, and as much as a lovely lil shoot to accompany it would've been, I'm almost glad we didn't have time. I love blogging, it is a huge part of my life, and a passion. But it doesn't meant that I should feel this weight and pressure on me to make sure that every single thing that I do is content-worthy. I have decided that I need to change my thought process, I am going to tell myself that some days are meant for "Me" Time, and others are for blogging. I think this will really help my work ethic and my mental health, and it doesn't mean that if I feel like I want to take a few shots during "Me" time I can't, it just means that I shouldn't feel the pressure to make it happen. I have found myself getting so caught up on making everything I do "bloggable", which in the end is taking away from the natural beauty of blogging. I honestly really think this will make my content so much more enjoyable, and it will relieve me of all this unnecessary stress I am putting myself under at the same time.

This doesn't just apply to blogging either, we live in a world dominated by social media, with Instagram being the top dog, and the exact same process applies here. We all feel this mad pressure to get some lush shots of our food and coffee, instead of enjoying the moment first and connecting with the people we are sharing it with. It is such a hard and complicated point to get across, because I love social media - but I don't love the pressure and rigidness of it. My favourite things to post are images that project who I am as a person, bright bold and colourful abstract edits and candid / laughing images. My content is about what makes me happy not what I think is acceptable, or - "bloggable".  I have noticed a lot more engagement on my Instagram account now that i am more myself and I think that speaks volumes, and backs up what I am saying that being true to yourself and not trying to fit the mould is what matters.

It all comes down to the undoubted pressure that we all place upon ourselves, the pressure to always be creating good quality content, and keeping it fresh and interesting. But in this process we are loosing the organic way of blogging, which creates the most natural (and therefor best) content of all. Ultimately, if the shooting doesn't come naturally on the day don't force it. I  have found that my favourite shots are the ones where I am laughing or messing around, the ones where I am not thinking too much about "blogging". Or like this shoot in Newcastle, we went on a mini adventure, a lot of it turned out unplanned and spur of the moment, and that is what I loved most. Having fun and experimenting, and showcasing your personality and who you are is what is most important. Some things are meant for you, and that is 100% okay. But more so, don't make everything you do revolve around if it is good content or not - yes that's cool and undoubtedly will encourage you to do fun new things, but it is also putting a lot of unnecessary strain on yourself. What is important about blogging is how you choose to let your personality shine - no matter what you are doing, what people will come back for is YOU. So, instead of thinking everything you do needs to be bloggable, have more faith in the fact that there is really no such thing as "bloggable" - you create that on your own through being yourself.

I know I have definitely gone of on a tangent on this one, but I think I've put my point across. More than anything it has reminded me of the truth to blogging, and how we all really need to go easier on ourselves. I know for those who are reading this who aren't bloggers this may seem a bit odd, but hopefully it will give you an insight as to what goes on behind closed doors, but more so is just a reminder to be yourself! No one should ever feel the need to fit into a mould of what society has deemed acceptable. What will be will be, and what comes naturally is always the most beautiful thing. So until next time,

XOXO, EMMA
